An impressive achievement: water-based coating systems for the medical technology sector

In medical technology, surfaces are regarded as a crucial quality feature. They must be chemically resistant, mechanically robust, hygienically sound and, at the same time, visually appealing. Plastic housings and components of medical devices are treated daily with cleaning agents and disinfectants and must retain their function and appearance over the long term.

At the same time, sustainable, low-emission production processes are becoming increasingly important. Legal requirements and environmental targets demand a significant reduction in volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Manufacturers are therefore increasingly turning to water-based systems that combine high technical performance with environmental compatibility. To meet these requirements, WB Coatings has developed a tailored, practical coating system that ranges from primer to topcoat.

Adhesion and process reliability on plastics

A key challenge in the coating of medical devices is achieving reliable adhesion to plastics such as ABS or PS. The WB61-1 Ikarol Aqua Grund 1K has been developed specifically for these substrates. As a water-dilutable primer and filler, it offers excellent adhesion properties and dries particularly quickly, enabling short process times. Its good sandability also ensures a uniform surface and creates the basis for high-quality topcoats. It thus fulfils one of the most important requirements for durable, process-reliable paint systems on plastic housings.

Electromagnetic shielding for plastic enclosures

Many electronic devices used in medical technology need to be protected against electromagnetic interference. The WB61-2 Ikarol EMV Beschichtung Aqua 1K provides a conductive, water-based solution for this purpose. Based on copper pigments, it achieves a surface resistance of less than 1.5 ohms in accordance with VDE 0303, thereby ensuring reliable electromagnetic shielding even for non-conductive plastic enclosures. The coating can be overcoated with 1K and 2K systems and integrates seamlessly into existing coating processes.

Appearance, feel and durability

In addition to functionality, the visual and tactile quality of the surface plays a crucial role. Medical devices should not only be hygienic and durable, but should also blend harmoniously into modern laboratory and clinical environments. With the water-based 2K-PU textured coatings WB64-1, WB64-2 und WB64-3 Aquapur, a wide variety of textures can be achieved – from coarse to micro-fine, in various gloss levels and colour shades. The coatings conceal minor irregularities, ensure a pleasant feel and allow for customised design.

For surfaces subject to particularly heavy wear, the WB68-1 Aquapur Decklack 2K is used. It offers high surface hardness, excellent scratch resistance and maximum resistance to disinfectants and cleaning chemicals. This ensures that equipment remains in perfect visual and functional condition even after repeated cleaning – a significant contribution to hygiene, product safety and longevity.

Long-lasting performance with environmentally friendly technology

WB Coatings’ water-based systems combine technical performance with sustainable formulations. The use of water-dilutable binders significantly reduces VOC content without compromising on adhesion, workability or durability. The systems can be applied efficiently, are equally suitable for industrial mass production and specialised applications, and offer a high degree of flexibility in colour design thanks to the RELAMIX colour mixing system.
